Product information : This is an original 1883 color chromotypograph of two Japanese Fukusa from the Edo Period. Depicted on them are a bamboo stalk and a crane perched upon a pine branch. The Fukusa was used in traditional tea ceremonies and as a covering for gifts similar to modern gift wrapping. Often these fukusa would have images of great importance to the recipient of the gift or ceremony. This piece was reproduced from the private collection of M. De Nittis. The print was produced by Firmin Gillot. This is notable because there are reliefs in the piece that give the texture to the decorative elements, a practice characteristic of his own version of paniconography applied to print rather than photographs which would later be perfected by his son Charles and called Gillotage. Firmin Gillot was a French lithographer and printer from the 19th century. While he spent years working with standard print, he eventually invented a practice called paniconography in which reliefs were used to add a layer of detail in photographs. Years later he would invent a new style of paniconography which was applied to print rather than photographs which would later be perfected by his son Charles and who patented and named the style Gillotage. While he is known for these technical contributions to art, he was also famous for his portraits of historical figures, some of which were paniconographic and some in Gillotage which were more exaggerated and humerous .
